The institute is independent of political and other organizations and pursues the purpose to perform an active and innovative contribution to the deliberate creation of the social processes. In this respect the activity areas Research, Consultation and Competence support to understand as elements referring to each other of an integrated practically oriented scientific activity.

Main fields of our activity are: Scientific support of social projects, Evaluation (in particular: effect focussed evaluation, process evaluation, empowerment evaluation) researches and consultation activity to questions of the organization developments (including the social economy), the Gender Mainstreaming, the support and development of small and middle enterprises, the changes in the professional life and occupational world (special questions of the working sociology) and the requirements resulting from it for the competence developments as well as for regional structural developments (questions of the unity of professional life and social environment). The activity areas in research and consultation are organized project-shaped and own a practical relevance on the base more extensively of empiric analyses. We carry out extensive empiric investigations and we develop instruments and methods. We support projects and pilot experiments.
